April 11, 2013 (Hackensack, NJ) John Theurer Cancer Center at Hackensack University Medical Center, one of the nation's top 50 cancer centers, will be hosting a Women's Oncology Conference for gynecologists and generalists on Wednesday, April 24 from 7:30am to 1:00 pm. The event is intended for general oncologists, internists and family practitioners, medical oncologists, and allied health care providers in the northern New Jersey area. The program will feature leading experts from John Theurer Cancer Center, as well as the former president of the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists, Dr. John Curtin.

"It is imperative that gynecologists and generalists are aware of frequently encountered issues in gynecologic oncology, as well as the best practices to respond to these issues," said Babak Litkhoui, M.D., co-chief of gynecologic oncology, John Theurer Cancer Center and member of Regional Cancer Care Associates. "By the end of this conference, attendees will be knowledgeable on some of the most important recent developments in gynecologic oncology."

Evolving diagnostic, screening, medical, and surgical advances continue to expand our understanding, evaluation, and management of gynecologic cancers. Most pre-malignant and malignant conditions are diagnosed primarily by general gynecologists and are, at times managed primarily by them. This program is intended to provide a gynecologic oncologists' perspective on conditions commonly encountered by the generalist. Strategies to maximize clinical outcomes, cost and patient interventions, as well as guidelines for referral for subspecialist care will be reviewed.

The conference program will include presentations from the following physicians:

  • Dr. Babak Litkouhi, co-chief of gynecologic oncology: Endometrial Hyperplasia and Low-Grade Endometrial Cancer
  • Dr. Ami Vaidya, director of minimally invasive surgery: Understanding Common Benign And Premalignant Vulvar Disease
  • Dr. Donna McNamara, co-chief of gynecologic oncology: Clinical Trials Why They Matter and How Patients Benefit
  • Dr. Mary Jane Warden, acting chief of breast surgery: New Trends in Breast Cancer Management
  • Dr. John Curtin, former president of the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists: Current Status of Screening and Early Detection of Ovarian Cancer

"At John Theurer Cancer Center, we take seriously our commitment to continuing medical education," said Andrew Pecora, M.D., F.A.C.P., C.P.E. chief innovations officer, professor, and vice president of Cancer Services, John Theurer Cancer Center and president of Regional Cancer Care Associates. "Medical sciences and technologies are continually evolving and improving, so it is critically important that medical practitioners stay abreast of the most recent developments and discoveries in order to ensure optimal patient care."
