New Year's Duck Goes Pink for Breast Cancer - Havre de Grace Patch

Several surprises are in store for those attending the Havre de Grace New Year's eve celebration, according to Ed Grainger, chair of the Duck Drop committee.

One new twist: the artificial?duck, which plunges from a Susquehanna Hose Company ladder truck?to ring in 2013, will be pink.

Grainger pitched the idea of a pink duck to the Hose Company, which coordinates the annual affair.

?Personally, I?ve had some people I know?actually, everybody does, either a co-worker or a friend or a relative?who has had breast cancer and gone through treatment," Grainger said.

"A friend of mine that lives up in Forest Hill went through quite a rough year and recently rang the bell and is cancer free,? Grainger said.

"She inspired me to dedicate this year's Duck Drop to breast cancer awareness. We all know someone?friends, relatives,?co-workers?who have had this terrible disease. This is for them," he said.

The committee in charge of the Duck Drop approved the idea and decided to illuminate the duck with pink lights.

Dropping a duck has been a New Year?s tradition in Havre de Grace since 1999 and in recent years the duck has become symbolic.

Two years ago, the duck was red, white and blue for the 10-year anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, Grainger said. Last year, the duck kept its patriotic colors in recognition of the War of 1812.

This year's pink lights are in place and firefighters are checking out all the equipment to ensure the truck, the duck and all the trimmings are ready for the Dec. 31 event.

Other things that are new this year, according to Grainger:

• Hot chocolate and snacks will be available; donations go to Maryland's Susan G. Komen for a Cure.
• Pink Duck Drop t-shirts and water bottles will be for sale, with proceeds going to Maryland's Susan G. Komen for a Cure.
• Local Jeff Thompson will be DJing starting around 10 p.m.

?There will be some other surprises that they?ll see that evening,? Grainger said, but he wouldn?t give them away.

To find out, people will have to attend the Duck Drop?at?Havre de Grace Middle School?on Dec. 31. Music begins at 10 p.m., said Grainger. Fireworks will follow at midnight and so will the duck drop.
