Brother MFC-8950DW

Although nearly identical in most ways to the Brother MFC-8910DW that I recently reviewed, the Brother MFC-8950DW , offers enough extra to be easily worth the extra cost. The key additions are a higher paper capacity, making it suitable for even heavier-duty printing, and front-panel touch-screen controls, making it easier to give commands from the front panel. Either feature by itself can be well worth having. Together, they make the printer an Editors' Choice.

Clearly aimed at a micro or small office or workgroup with heavy-duty needs, the MFC-8950DW can print, scan, and fax, including over a network. It can also serve as a standalone copier and fax machine, with the touch screen helping to make it unusually easy to use in those roles. Notable conveniences include printing from and scanning to a USB memory key, as well as support for a variety of mobile printing options, including AirPrint, Google Cloud Print, and Brother's own mobile print and scan app. In addition, it offers Wi-Fi Direct, so you can easily connect to mobile devices.

Serious about Scanning
One of the more unusual touches for the MFC-8950DW is far better scan capability than you may expect. As with most MFPs aimed at offices, the MFC-8950DW includes both a flatbed and an automatic document feeder (ADF). Unlike the flatbeds on most small office MFPs, however, the MFC-8950DW's flatbed is big enough for legal-size pages.

You can also scan at legal size with the 50-page ADF, and scan in duplex (both sides of the page). Very much worth mention is that the scanner, rather than the ADF, does the duplexing, meaning it has two scan elements, so it can scan both sides of the page at the same time. Many, if not most, small office MFPs with duplex scanning use duplexing ADFs instead (often called reversing ADFs), which scan one side of the page, turn it over, and then scan the other side.

In theory, having two scan elements should let you scan both sides of the page as quickly as one side. In reality with the MFC-8950DW, the scanner visibly slowed down when I scanned in duplex. Even so, the speed was a lot faster than it would be scanning each side separately.

Not so incidentally, note that the ability to scan in duplex, combined with print duplexing, also lets you copy both single- and double-sided pages to your choice of single- or double-sided copies.

Paper Handling and Setup
For small offices with heavy-duty print needs, the MFC-8950DW also earns lots of points for its paper handling for printing, with a 500-sheet paper drawer, a 50-sheet multipurpose tray, and a built-in print duplexer standard. If you need still heavier-duty printing, you can bring the capacity up to 1,050 sheets with a 500-sheet second drawer option ($209.99 list), although the smarter choice is to get the Brother MFC-8950DWT ($700 street), which according to Brother is the identical printer with the second tray already added.

As you would expect for any MFP with this much paper capacity, the MFC-8950DW is too large to share a desk with comfortably. However it's small enough at 18.8 by 19.3 by 16.3 inches (HWD) that you shouldn't have any trouble finding room for it in most small offices. Once you have it in place, setup is standard.

Brother MFC-8950DW

Speed and Output Quality
The MFC-8950DW's speed is best described as respectably fast, but not impressive. For my tests, I connected the printer to a wired network and ran the tests from a Windows Vista system. Not surprisingly, given all the similarities to the MFC-8910DW, including the same 42 page-per-minute (ppm) engine rating, the two performed similarly on our tests. On our business applications suite, I timed the MFC-8950DW at 10.6 ppm, essentially tying the MFC-8910DW. As another point of reference, the somewhat less expensive Editors' Choice OKI MB471 scored a slightly slower 9.5 ppm.

Output quality is par for a mono laser MFP across the board, which makes it acceptable without being impressive. Text and graphics output are easily good enough for any internal business need, but text is a little short of what you'd want for high-quality desktop publishing, and depending on your level of perfectionism, you may not consider the graphics suitable for, say, PowerPoint handouts when you're trying to convey a sense of professionalism.

Photo quality is easily good enough for printing Web pages with photos. Whether you consider it suitable for printing photos in company or client newsletters and the like will depend, once again, on how much of a perfectionist you are.

In my MFC-8910DW review, I suggested that its ability to scan in duplex was a primary reason to either choose it if you need duplex scanning or pass on it if you don't, since there's no reason to pay extra for the feature if you don't need it. The same logic applies here to some extent, but the MFC-8950DW has other compelling arguments in its favor as well.

In an office with sufficiently heavy-duty print needs, the high paper capacity by itself can make the Brother MFC-8950DW worth getting, and the convenience of touch-panel controls can be particularly attractive if you expect to use the standalone copier and fax features often enough. Also worth mention is the printer's Gigabit Ethernet, which, depending on network traffic and the rest of your network hardware, could make a difference in the print speeds you'll actually see. All of these features together make the Brother MFC-8950DW Editors' Choice for any micro or small office with truly heavy-duty needs.

NASA Mars rover finds a crunchy 'blueberry' surprise

NASA's Curiosity rover may be stealing all the headline of late, but lest it be forgotten, the veteran rover Opportunity is still turning up geologic gems. A recent scan of rocky outcrops near the west rim of Endeavour Crater revealed a dense group of marble-sized spheres that have experts baffled.

NASA scientists working on the Opportunity mission at first thought the spheres looked like structures known as Martian blueberries. These iron-rich orbs, discovered at the rover's landing site in 2004, are thought to have formed millions of years ago, when the Red Planet was likely warm enough to host liquid water.

In some places minerals precipitated out of the water as it diffused through rock, leaving behind hard masses. Erosion eventually exposed the spherules embedded in outcrops, like blueberries in a muffin.

Similar spheres have been found in sandstones in the US Southwest, and some scientists think they may hold clues to finding microbial life on Mars.

But when Opportunity took a closer look at the new spheres using its X-ray spectrometer, the rover found that they don't "taste" like blueberries.

For one, the spheres don't contain nearly as much iron. They're also much more tightly clustered than previous groups of blueberries, and they have a more fragile disposition.

"They seem to be crunchy on the outside, and softer in the middle," Opportunity's principal investigator, Steve Squyres of Cornell University, said in a NASA statement.?

"They are different in concentration. They are different in structure. They are different in composition. They are different in distribution. So, we have a wonderful geological puzzle in front of us."

Luckily, Opportunity is still in good health, and engineers think the hardy rover should have plenty of juice left to study the mystery berries in the coming weeks.

Gymnasts' tour stops in Ontario - San Bernardino County Sun

ONTARIO - Following their triumphant showing at the 2012 London Olympics, gold medalists Gabby Douglas, Alexandra Raisman, Kyla Ross, McKayla Maroney and Jordyn Wieber, otherwise known as The Fierce Five, are the main attraction wherever they go.

The gold medalists are at Citizens Business Bank Arena today as part of the Kellogg's Tour of Gymnastics Champions.

"This tour is a celebration," said the 16-year-old Douglas, who also won the individual all-around championship. "It's our chance to connect with the fans, to show them things they've never seen before.

"We've got a lot of surprises for them in the show."

The athletes' 40-city tour ends Nov. 18. The quintet and other tourmates said the event is far from traditional competitions that tend to be stiff and structured. This one, they said, is a high-energy extravaganza that combines their skills with dance, aerial acrobatics, trampoline and even a bit of humor.

Neon lights will flash, strobe and illuminate the arena to the beat of modern-day music.

"We have all worked really hard on this amazing show," said 18-year-old Raisman, who also won gold in the floor exercise and a bronze medal on the balance beam. "We are having so much fun. We are so much more relaxed.

"It is so much different than the Olympics, where the pressure is high and the spotlight is always on you."

The show's musical choreography incorporates dance and gymnastics, creating a hybrid

possible only with the skill level of the talented performers.

"The Kellogg's Tour of Gymnastics Champions is a celebration of our sport," Steve Penny, president of USA Gymnastics, said in a prepared statement. "It provides the perfect stage for Americans to celebrate and welcome our Olympians home from winning six medals at the 2012 Olympic Games in London."

Other athletes performing tonight include 2008 Olympic all-around champion Nastia Liukin, 2012 Olympic team members John Orozco and Jake Dalton, 2008 Olympic silver medalist Jonathan Horton, Chellsie Memmel and Alicia Sacramone.

"The entire country watched these amazing athletes reach their full potential as they competed in London," said Doug VanDeVelde, Kellogg Company executive in a press release. "We are honored to help bring their amazing performances to fans in cities across the U.S. as these athletes continue to inspire us all and demonstrate how great starts lead to great things."

Fans also can learn about the athletes' beginnings through a series of online "Start Story" videos that follow their journeys, which can be viewed at Kelloggs.com/teamusa.

"I have been so inspired by others; I want to be an inspiration," Douglas said. "I want to encourage everyone to have a dream and to give that dream all you've got.

"It's not about the money. It's not about the fame. It's not about the glory. It's about passing down the belief of achieving your dreams. Set your goals high then work hard to achieve them.

"With hard work and a belief in yourself they can come true. They will come true."

sex work, gender, and feminism ? blackglassmoon

Categorization becomes problematic when we filter our perspectives through a binary lens. Gender is cross-culturally polarized, a category that feminism seeks to disassemble through difference. This social movement deconstructs dualisms as it encounters structures that limit visibility and voice. We cannot ignore the commonality of our diversity. Our narratives are able to articulate poems of our choice; lives of our choice. These are complex cultural and commoditized notions we place in the power of things. Sometimes these things are ink and pen, sometimes these things are dreams. Sometimes these things are our bodies. What part of ourselves represents who we are? Is it our identity, our employment, our memories, our relationships, or is it something else? A patriarchal culture of European colonization of the New World has infused its Western logic into the majority of the world. The cultural logic promotes salient qualities of masculinity that promote aggression towards women. In order to change this logic we must create space that allows a non-colonial acceptance; a place to share our stories.

If we unfold one argument, sex work is a byproduct of a patriarchal colonial and capitalist world. Many people view sex work as an environment that encourages violence towards women. This perspective reinforces the logic of colonial violence. The structure in the colonial exchange of service is such that it is organized in a hierarchal relationship. Here dominant subterfuge opposes a subservient marginalized one. In the monetary sense of sex work maybe, but what about the voice of these women? The societal construct embodies a polarized exclusionary view. What of male sex work and same-sex sex work? Furthermore why do we fear these alternative views of logic? How is sex work different from sitting in front of the computer at the office? How do fear and bodies utilize the sex industry and what does this say about colonialism and violence? Intimacy and sexuality in identity interplay the webbed structure and social nuance of power dynamics. Our inability to transcend society?s racial and gendered logic contributes to the victimization of its participants. If we are able to alter the logic that focuses on these issues we are able to liberate and empower a non-colonial love. This affects intimacy and our world culture on a larger social platform in an increasingly technologically connected world.

I am a survivor of domestic violence. In my work I share and seek language that makes visible alternative modes of logic in a way that valuably seeks to dissipate gender based violence. We live in a fluctuating lexicon of power ideologies of gender, economy, and cultural variables. ?An emotional intelligence within this framework is presented in a feminist discourse. The masculine perspective of the mind comingles with the feminine. The equations balance inequality and equality, contrast tradition and devastation, and support a frame work that seeks to support and disassemble structure at the same time. One of the ways in which we are able to change logic is by sharing our humanity in creative ways that nurture the similarities in our difference.

Patriarchal structures in language and culture are represented by the mind. Inequality is placed on the feminine body and the masculine is given dominance. I would like to examine how different structures of logic affect this rooted system and how we are able to change this logic through language. The architecture of the argument affects how I perceive gender, patriarchy, capitalism, and culture. As ?other? we reach a full spectrum of voice. Feminism requires flexibility. It is important to look at abusive and empowering patterns in sex work and how it confronts gender stereotypes, offsets categories of sexuality, and changes perspectives in empowerment, self, and body. This is in contrast to a disposable hierarchical relationship. Without the voice of ?other,? feminism fails. I explore these issues through the groundwork of a community immersed in such dialogues. These models embrace difference and accept contradiction.

The language of academia surrounding these topics is in need of unsettling, uncomfortable cracks. We create new divisions, valuable critique, and language that promote innovative points of view. Exchange in communication and perspective is necessary in art and human experience. Language is in itself its own body in every culture. It sets the paradigms for social constructs, cultural tradition, and technological novelty. In our contradictions we find the schisms necessary for conversations that dissolve dualisms. Poetry is a way to investigate the tensions I have outlined. When we are placed outside of our comfort zone, we learn the most about ourselves because we in hand become ?other?. When we accept ourselves as ?other? we empower the world community as a whole.
