Student Aid Report: Read it and Weep - How Will I Pay for College ...

How quickly you receive the SAR depends on how you filed your FAFSA. If you file a paper FAFSA, it may take 2-3 weeks, or more. If you file electronically through the Department of Education website, your SAR can be available in 3 to 10 days. However, if you do not receive your SAR within 4 weeks, ?you should call the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-4-FED-AID or 1-319-337-5665. ?They will ask for some identification information (Social Security number, date of birth, etc), and then they will let you know if your FAFSA has been processed. You can also write to the?Federal Student Aid Information Center?for the status of your FAFSA at:

Federal Student Aid Programs

Washington, DC 52243-4038

The SAR will summarize the information on the FAFSA, and tell ?you how much Pell Grant money you qualify for, your calculated Expected Family Contribution (EFC), as well as a summary of any outstanding loans. Note also that the SAR will contain a Data Release Number (DRN), a four-digit reference number that you will need if you want to send the SAR to additional schools that you did not include when you filed your FAFSA. Students should keep a copy of their SAR in their college folder (you did start a folder, didn't you?).

If you review your SAR and find a mistake, you will need to correct or update your FAFSA. ?You can ?make changes to the FAFSA in one of three different ways:
  • Online FAFSA Corrections? You can go to the FAFSA website and make online corrections by selecting "Make FAFSA Corrections" after logging in. This is the fastest way to update your application, and highly recommended. You will need the student PIN you received when initially registering at the FAFSA website.?If the student is a dependent, a parent PIN is required as well.?You can correct anything on the application except for the student's Social Security Number (SSN). If you made a mistake in reporting your SSN, ask the financial aid office at the school you plan to attend whether you should start over again and submit a new FAFSA.?The financial aid office might be able to make other changes for you electronically, as well.?
  • Paper FAFSA Corrections?Write the corrections or changes directly on your paper SAR, sign it, and mail it to the address provided on the SAR (keep a copy in your folder, remember?)
  • Phone FAFSA Corrections You can add a school to your FAFSA by calling the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-433-3243. You will need to provide your DRN, which is found both on your SAR and online on the FAFSA website.
After your target schools receive your SAR and prepare your financial aid package, they will send an award letter to you (which you will keep in your folder). This Financial Aid Award Notice can be confusing (perhaps even misleading), though the Department of Education is attempting to clarify and standardize this (see the second paragraph of this post).?

After you receive all of your financial aid notices, you can follow these steps to figure out your ?net cost for each school on a comparable basis, to see which school is most affordable for you.
  • First, find the total cost of attendance for your program on the aid letter (you may need to?ask the financial aid office of that school if it is not clearly listed in the letter). Be ?sure it includes what you pay directly to the school (tuition, room & board, and fees) as well as other costs (living expenses, books & supplies, and transportation).
  • Next, subtract the grant and scholarship amounts (Pell Grants, FSEOG, school grants/scholarships, etc) on your aid offer from the cost of attendance. This is free money that does not have to be repaid, and reduces your tuition directly. Also subtract any savings you have available to put toward your school costs for the upcoming school year (either a 529 plan or other savings). The remaining amount is your net out-of-pocket cost.
  • Finally, compare the net costs for all of the schools you are considering. The net cost is the amount you will have to pay out of your pocket, using earnings from work or from student loans that you will need to apply for (or perhaps from your crowdfunding efforts!)

While all of this government paperwork might remind of filing your income taxes, I highly recommend that you do not hire one of the organizations that offer to fill out your FAFSA (or help you to fill it out). The questions are really quite simple (though some terms and acronyms can slow you down), and many won't apply to you. Just take your time, get educated, and read the paperwork carefully, and you can get through this in no time.

Did Lucy walk on the ground or stay in the trees?

Dec. 31, 2012 ? Much has been made of our ancestors "coming down out of the trees," and many researchers view terrestrial bipedalism as the hallmark of "humanness." After all, most of our living primate relatives -- the great apes, specifically -- still spend their time in the trees. Humans are the only member of the family devoted to the ground, living terrestrial rather than arboreal lives, but that wasn't always the case.

The fossil record shows that our predecessors were arboreal habitu?s, that is, until Lucy arrived on the scene. About 3.5 million years ago in Africa, this new creature, Australopithecus afarensis, appeared; Lucy was the first specimen discovered. Anthropologists agree that A. afarensis was bipedal, but had Lucy and her legions totally forsaken the trees? The question is at the root of a controversy that still rages.

"Australopithecus afarensis possessed a rigid ankle and an arched, nongrasping foot," write Nathaniel Dominy and his co-authors in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). "These traits are widely interpreted as being functionally incompatible with climbing and thus definitive markers of terrestriality," says Dominy, an associate professor of anthropology at Dartmouth.

But not so fast; this interpretation may be a rush to judgment in light of new evidence brought to light by Dominy and his colleagues. They did what anthropologists do. They went out and looked at modern humans who, like Lucy, have feet adapted to terrestrial bipedalism, and found these people can still function as effective treeclimbers.

Co-authors Vivek Venkataraman and Thomas Kraft collaborated with Dominy on field studies in the Philippines and Africa that inform their PNAS paper. Venkataraman and Kraft are Dartmouth graduate students in the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology PhD program in the Department of Biological Sciences, and are supported by National Science Foundation graduate research fellowships.

The studies in Uganda compared Twa hunter-gatherers to their agriculturalist neighbors, the Bakiga. In the Philippines, the researchers studied Agta hunter-gatherers and Manobo agriculturalists. Both the Twa and the Agta habitually climb trees in pursuit of honey, a highly nutritious component of their diets. They climb in a fashion that has been described as "walking" up small-diameter trees. The climbers apply the soles of their feet directly to the trunk and "walk" upward, with their arms and legs advancing alternately.

Among the climbers, Dominy and his team documented extreme dorsiflexion -- bending the foot upward toward the shin to an extraordinary degree -- beyond the range of modern "industrialized" humans. Assuming their leg bones and ankle joints were normal, "we hypothesized that a soft-tissue mechanism might enable such extreme dorsiflexion," the authors write.

They tested their hypothesis using ultrasound imaging to measure and compare the lengths of gastrocnemius muscle fibers -- the large calf muscles -- in all four groups -- the Agta, Manobo, Twa and Bakiga. The climbing Agta and Twa were found to have significantly longer muscle fibers.

"These results suggest that habitual climbing by Twa and Agta men changes the muscle architecture associated with ankle dorsiflexion," write the scientists, demonstrating that a terrestrially adapted foot and ankle do not exclude climbing from the behavioral repertoire of human hunter- gatherers, or Lucy.

In their conclusions, the Dartmouth team highlights the value of modern humans as models for studying the anatomical correlates of behavior, both in the present and in the dim past of our fossil ancestors.

Obama, Hillary Clinton top Gallup's most admired: Who else is on the list?

President Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton both extended their winning streaks as the man and woman most admired by Americans. The women's list is more diverse than the men's.

By Linda Feldmann,?Staff writer / December 31, 2012

President Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton have both extended their streaks as the man and woman most admired by Americans in the world, according to Gallup.

For Mr. Obama, who was mentioned by 30 percent of those interviewed, it is his fifth year in a row topping the list. For Secretary Clinton, with 21 percent, it?s her 11th straight year on top and 17th overall, adding to her lead as the woman with the most top finishes. The question is open-ended, and the man and woman named must be alive.

Since Gallup started asking the ?most admired woman? question in 1948, former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt is second overall to Clinton, with 13 top finishes. On the men?s list, which started in 1946, former General and President Dwight Eisenhower has the most top finishes, with 12. Former President Ronald Reagan and former President Bill Clinton are tied for second with eight, and former President George W. Bush is third with seven.

?Obama's position as the Most Admired Man is not unusual,? writes Frank Newport, Gallup editor in chief. ?Sitting presidents, with their extremely high visibility and essentially continuous presence in ongoing news coverage, have won the Most Admired Man honor 56 times out of the 66 years in which Gallup has asked the question ? including each of the past 32 years in a row.?

Former Presidents Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, and George H.W. Bush each won four times.

The all-time list of most top finishes for women is a more diverse group. After Clinton and Mrs. Roosevelt come former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher (six times), former first lady Jacqueline Kennedy (five), Mother Teresa (four), former Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir (three), and former first ladies Rosalynn Carter and Nancy Reagan (three each).

The Change In Your Couch

Unconventional Financing

Building Assets

Building assets is your best method of financial positioning. Even if you abort your plans late in the planning stages, you can use most of these assets for other purposes.

Home Equity

Despite the current housing market, many people have considerable equity in their homes. In fact, home equity loans and lines of credit are a primary financing source for many first-time business owners. If you?re just beginning your planning, you might consider making modest upgrades to your home to increase its value.

Retirement Funds

You might be able to borrow against a 401 (k) plan, even choosing the interest rate of your loan to yourself. In any case, having a retirement plan improves your net worth, which helps when you apply for a conventional loan. If you?re still in the planning stages, adding to your retirement plan now can pay off later.

I?m mostly including a mention of retirement funds for completeness. Due to the risk involved, I like the idea of borrowing from a retirement fund even less than I like leveraging home equity. It shouldn?t be a primary source of your financing. Its primary use should be in establishing a healthy picture for your banker, so that you can invest his money instead.

Stocks & Bonds

You might not have an investment portfolio, but if your current job offers stocks, it?s time to evaluate what you have or start buying in while you?re still planning your store. Depending on how you plan to finance your store, you might want to keep the stocks or liquidate your holdings. If you do cash out, watch your timing and try to wait as long as possible; if you decide not to enter the game retail industry after all, you probably can?t buy back into those stocks.

Trade Magazines

Virtually every industry has its own trade magazines, and these trades pay good money for articles. If you can explain something in simple terms, stick to a topic, and follow a publisher?s guidelines, you might be able to crank out an article or two. With some trades paying up to $2 a word, a single article might net $500 to $6,000. You don?t have to be a professional writer, either. The most important skill is knowledge of your topic.

Coin Collecting

I used to deliver pizzas. At the end of the night, instead of turning in my coins with my other money, I threw them in a jar. Every Christmas season, my wife and I rolled that change to pay for the holidays. The last year we did that, we cashed in $1087. When I left there to buy my game store, the joke around the pizza place became that ?Lloyd bought War Dogs with rolled-up coins.? While you probably can?t cover all your expenses, a couple of years? worth of change could help you reach your break-even months sooner than expected.

Multiple Bank Accounts

It?s easy to rack up multiple bank accounts. You have your main account for your family. Then you have the old one you used when you were single. You might have a cash reserve in an investment account. There?s that account with the expensive bank that you only opened to collect the $25 signup bonus. You have some money in PayPal. Corral all of these stray dollars into one place and you might be surprised at how much it is.

Yard Sale

Turn a bunch of junk into cash. A successful yard sale might net up to $1,000, depending on how much you have to sell. Just as nice, it might clear up space in your garage where you can stockpile fixtures until you?re ready to move into your storefront.

Your Test-Market

In an earlier article, I recommended testing your local market by running a convention space, hitting trade shows, or helping an existing retailer. I?ve even seen game retailers run flea market tables. This method works best with second-hand merchandise that you can buy cheaply and sell quickly, often starting with a personal collection. Start with just $200 or so in inventory and build up from there, reinvesting your sales into more merchandise. If you?re lucky, you might start with $2,000 to $5,000 in second-hand goods that you won?t have to buy when you open your store.

Demo Materials

If you took my advice to become a demo volunteer, you might have a collection of materials to start with. If you really ran with it and become a volunteer for multiple companies, you could have more materials than some stores use. Between promo material and any unopened compensation they sent you in the form of product, you could have a few hundred dollars in assets.

Start a Fixture Collection

Retailers often end up becoming fixture junkies. You can?t help but look around any given store, not just to see what they have, but how they display it. You?ll ask yourself ?Can I use something like that?? surprisingly often. Start your neurosis early by acquiring cheap and free fixtures while you?re still in the planning stage, months before you sign a lease. Picking up a usable piece each month might save hundreds or thousands off of your startup costs by the time you open.

You can find cheap fixtures in auctions and going-out-of-business sales around town. You might make an offer to a landlord who?s stuck with the property of a vanished tenant. You can find free fixtures occasionally when stores of any size?convenience to big-box?remodel. If you?re in the right place at the right time, or put yourself in the right place at the right time, you can snag very expensive fixtures that would otherwise be thrown out.

Manufacturer Charity

The manufacturers whose products you?ll sell have a vested interest in seeing you succeed. The attitude of manufacturers toward retailers runs the gamut from heavy favor to outright disdain, but asking for promotional materials and products can yield some much-needed inventory. As always, don?t ask for things you don?t need and don?t get greedy. Asking for a bonus on top of an order is better than just asking for a freebie outright, for example.

Buy Debt

While many people avoid debt, the right use of your company?s credit and your personal credit is a tool for you to use. Carpenters don?t refuse to use nails out of some crazy sense of elitism or personal acumen. Neither should you be afraid to indebt your company if it?s the best thing for your company?s overall health.

Assume the Seller?s Debt

If you plan to start by buying an existing business, then you can reduce your purchase price by acquiring debt at the same time. Suppose, for example, that a store owner wants $25,000 for his store. When you ask about his current debts, he tells you that he owes his distributors $4,000 in current and late bills. Tell him you?d be willing to take over that debt if he?ll reduce his asking price by $4,000. If he has any intention at all of paying that bill, there?s little reason to reject your offer. You can then negotiate repayment terms with the distributors to whom he owes money. Offering to repay $200 on top of each weekly order defers that final payment by 5 months.

Continue that exercise with each of the seller?s individual outstanding debts (rent, utilities, other service providers, etc.) and you might save yourself $15,000 in upfront cash. You?ll pay off most or all of it eventually, but you?ll reduce the startup funds needed by a substantial amount.

Credit Cards

No sane person would tell you to put all of your startup expenses on a credit card, but it can make sense to finance your capital reserve on personal credit of one kind or another. Notice the careful and deliberate use of the word ?can.? That doesn?t mean it always makes sense. Some factors in favor of this plan include a) a low burn amount needed, b) low interest rates on the credit cards , c) a strong incentive plan with your credit card company, or d) high local commercial loans rates.

Bring on Investors

Someone investing a few thousand dollars can put you over a benchmark and turn on the light green for you to continue forward. These investments need not be large. An investment of $500 up front could be worth far more than its face value in its reduction of your primary loan repayment, depending on how you word your investor agreements (hint: defer any repayment for six months to a year after opening). Such low-dollar investments are much easier to get from friends and family than a $20,000 lump sum.

2 Responses to Five Big Developments for Digital Health in 2013

I read with interest a few articles discussing predictions for digital health technologies for 2013.? One such amusing article in informationweek.com had some which were in more detailed described as ?By the end of 2013, the implementation of such a system will be ?only [five] years away from being a reality?? A truly welcomed breath of intellectual and reality-filled fresh air was furnished by an article by David Shaywitz in Forbes yesterday.? In the following space I would like to discuss a few predictions about areas of digital health that I myself consider important.

1.??? Globalization of digital health technologies. There are many countries developing digital health technologies at breakneck speed. Some are collaborating. The World Economic Forum?s Global Agenda Council on Digital Health is a starting point for the discussion on a political and economic level.? The Council is made up of political and business leaders.? I look forward to more collaborative efforts on a developmental level. There are many developers in India and Israel who are have American partners and I think there will be more from the EU when regulatory issues in the USA are clarified (see below).

2.??? Finalization of Regulatory Guidelines and Standards for mobile medical apps.? We have been waiting for the finalized guidance from the FDA pertaining to mobile medical apps.? Developers, investors, business partners, and healthcare strategists have been anticipating this important document. It has worldwide implications as it has been hinted at that the EU might adopt the same guidance. Also anticipated is the finalization of health, fitness, and medical app certification standards by Happtique which would then herald the initiation of its certification program. Once these occur, the emergence of apps on the scene will be accelerated. I look for 2013 to be a big year in this regard. I am totally realistic in saying that this will only be a beginning and not implying adoption.

3.??? Emergence of patient portals.? The beginning of implementation of Stage 2 Meaningful Use criteria which include patient portals is an extremely important development for 2013. It will be the first step in patient participation of their digital health information. The importance of patient portal adoption was discussed in a previous post of this author.

4.??? Clinical Studies.? There will be an acceleration of outcome studies of technologies ranging from EHR data tracking/analytics to remote patient monitoring and body sensors.? There has been a significant number of voices discussing the importance of proving that these technologies improve outcome and also decrease cost recently.? Even if outcomes are equivalent and cost reduction is significant, it would send a validating signal.

5.??? Development of business models.? Many of the emerging technologies of digital health do not fit neatly into established and traditional business models in healthcare.? Some technologies are consumer oriented, some span multiple business models because end users are in different sectors, and some do not understand how they can be monetized. 2013 will be a year in which I believe some new business models in the space will emerge.? Certainly new trails will be blazed in that regard.

So while these issues have been discussed before and I do not believe these predictions are revolutionary, I believe the time is here for some gelling of the ingredients of digital health.? The ingredients are determined, the guest list made, and the table set.? Let?s get cooking. Happy New Year to all.

Chargers coach Turner assumes he'll be fired

SAN DIEGO - Chargers coach Norv Turner sounded like a coach resigned to his fate.

"We're going to meet tomorrow and with the team and I'm sure they will start looking for a new coach," said an emotional Turner about his future with the Chargers after they earned a 24-21 victory over the Oakland Raiders on Sunday before 66,486 at Qualcomm Stadium.

"To have a career in this league means a lot," Turner continued. "These six years have been awesome for me and to be part of this organization and to lead this group of guys...they know how I feel. Nothing's guaranteed in terms of what you're doing. I think we've worked hard to make the most out of every situation we've been put in.

"As I said, I feel fortunate to have been here the last six years. It's emotional. There's a lot going on."

Turner addressed the players after the game.

"It was emotional and he talked about how we didn't do exactly what we wanted to do, but these last couple of weeks have been real special," said kickoff-punt returner Micheal Spurlock on Turner's postgame speech. "Everyone else can speculate and do all of those things, but as far as I know, he's still my coach."

Turner's dismissal has been the subject of published reports for weeks. Charger general manager A.J. Smith also is expected to be fired. His status also is expected to be determined Monday.

The duo's expected demise didn't affect the team's performance Sunday, as the Chargers (7-9) swept their AFC West rival and earned their third win in a row over Oakland (4-12).

"We're already looking forward to next year," said Raiders running back Darren McFadden, who managed just 57 yards on 19 carries and didn't record a run of more than eight yards.

Two touchdown passes by quarterback Philip Rivers helped pave the way for the Chargers, though both teams struggled offensively. Rivers completed 13 of 17 passes for 151 yards with no interceptions, while his counterpart, Terrelle Pryor, finished 13 of 28 for 150 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. Pryor, who made his first start as a pro, replacing the injured Carson Palmer, also ran for 49 yards and a score.

Overall, the Raiders finished with 265 yards of offense to only 210 for San Diego. Oakland also compiled more rushing yards than the Chargers - 115-70.

The Chargers started with a bang. Spurlock, who returned a punt for a touchdown in the previous week's win over the Jets, opened the game against Oakland with a 99-yard kickoff return for a 7-0 Chargers lead.

"It was unbelievable," Spurlock said.

San Diego increased the margin to 10-0 on a 30-yard field goal by Nick Novak with 4:11 left in the first quarter.

The Raiders cut the gap to 10-7 when Pryor tossed his first touchdown pass as a pro, a nine-yard reception by wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey with 12:11 remaining in the second quarter.

"He just called the play in the huddle, so I knew he was going to throw it up to me," Heyward-Bey said. "I went up there and made the play for him. It was good to get his first touchdown out of the way so we could move on."

The Chargers answered with a 14-play, 81-yard drive that consumed 9:23. It concluded with an 11-yard scoring pass from Rivers to tight end Antonio Gates with 2:48 left in the half for a 17-7 advantage.

In the third quarter, Rivers connected with wide receiver Danario Alexander on a 34-yard touchdown pass with 4:59 left for a 24-7 lead.

Pryor's three-yard run with 7:43 remaining in the game pulled Oakland to within 24-14.

After Oakland's Coye Francies blocked a Mike Scifres punt and Kaelin Burnett recovered it at the San Diego 11, Pryor hit wide receiver Denarius Moore with 1:52 left, slicing the Chargers' advantage to 24-21.

However, San Diego recovered the onside kick and ran out the clock. The clock on Turner could expire Monday.

"It was emotional as it was the last game," Chargers safety Eric Weddle said. "After the game it was pretty emotional because we don't know what's going to happen. We have a lot of love for Norv and what he's done for us, including myself. He helped grow me to the player that I am. He had a lot to do with that."

B.C. residents still have longest life expectancy in Canada, new report shows

B.C.?s most-recent vital-statistics report says residents of this province continue to live longer than anywhere else in Canada, although cancer remains the leading cause of death.

The 140th edition of the report by the Vital Statistics Agency contains information about births, deaths and marriages for 2011 and helps the provincial government develop plans for health research and education.

It says life expectancy climbed to 82 years, up from 81.7 years, but the oldest person to die in 2011 lived to be 112 years old.

Cancer remains the leading cause of death, but the report says deaths due to HIV fell to 59 from 253 in 1996.

While the total number of deaths rose to 31,776, the province?s population grew naturally by 12,215 people, without taking migration into consideration.

The report says the most popular names selected for boys were Liam, Ethan, Mason, Lucas and Benjamin, but for girls the names Emma, Olivia, Sophia, Ava and Chloe won out.

Apple n00b, iPad questions

1: Is there anyway to sync Outlook Notes to my iPad? Calendar, Contacts, Email, and Tasks sync fine, but I can't find any option for Notes. I read that this can't be done wirelessly, but thought I should confirm with the experts. This seems odd. They sync to my BlackBerry over the BES just fine.

How do you have your Outlook account set up? I noticed in my accounts that with an Exchange account, there's no option for Notes, but with an IMAP account, there is.

2: Is there anyway to collapse all subfolders in the email app? I have dozens of folders and subfolders in my Exchange account, and it's really annoying to scroll through all these to file a simple email. I couldn't imagine having to deal with this on my work email account which probably has thousands of subfolder.

You should see two groups of email - one at the top just showing your inboxes and one below showing accounts where you can view all subfolders. Try just looking at the inbox view.

3: My appointments all synced with the Exchange server, but existing appointments are all in GMT time, but I'm set for Vancouver. Well I should rephrase: the appointment shows the correct Vancouver time in the day/week/month view, but when I open the appointment it shows in GMT time instead of PST like everything else is set. RPG Knight of the Earthends (for Android)

Knight of the Earthends is the latest RPG from Kemco, which churns out decent-quality Android and iOS RPG games at a fearsome pace. This one falls in the middle of Kemco's quality lineup; it's more diverting than DarkGate, but nowhere near as good as Symphony of Eternity. Still, for classic RPG fans, it's worth a look.

Kemco's secret looks to be that it's building a lot of these games on the same engine. So, like in other Kemco games, your party is made up of 16-bit sprites who wander through a relatively open overworld and a series of towns and dungeons. The game is relatively linear, using cut-scenes to push you from each town-dungeon combo to the next. Each new town has better equipment to buy, of course, and dungeons are very easily mastered because of an extremely revealing mini-map mode. There are no in-app purchases, which I absolutely love.

Moving around maps is very easy thanks to a tap-to-move system which does away with virtual D-pads. In battles, you can go purely turn-based or auto-fight; if you choose auto-fight you won't get to use spells or special attacks, though.

Spend a Few Hours With Friends
The company's specialties, story and character, buoy you along through the relatively short 10-hour main plot. (After you complete the plot, some bonus dunegons appear to hack your way through.) Knight of the Earthends is easier than some other RPGs I've played recently; I didn't find any hitches or need to grind levels as long as I played my battles smartly.

The characters in this case are Reiya, a very businesslike knight; Raud, a cranky android, and Yuinika, a kind of elflike creature with a horn. Yuinika is both literally and figuratively horny, and keeps hitting on Reiya; the banter never gets R-rated, but it's probably PG-13. The three start out defeating demons, and end up embroiled in global politics. Naturally, along the way they become friends.?

The English-language translation is clunky at times. It never quite reaches "all your base are belong to us" levels, but you're very conscious that you're playing a translated game. Still, though, the characters have strong personalities.

The actual adventure also suffers a little bit from being too predictably structured: it's never a JRPG spoiler to tell you that our heroes are going to have to defeat two essentially concentric sets of four main dungeons each before killing the big boss and saving the world. That said, Kemco has offered more complex plots such as in Aeon Avenger, and I hope they do so again.

A Classy System
Knight of the Earthends' creativity comes in its level and class system. Each of the characters is essentially a different, fixed class. Reiya buys "skill books" which give her individual skills that can then be combined into custom, special combo attacks. Raud levels up by buying him parts and upgrades, which have various attacks and powers attached to them.?

Yuinika's skill is the most brilliant. The horn-girl levels up in "styles" acquired by killing batches of various kinds of monsters; Demon, Golem, Beast, Slime, and Mimic are five of the 14 styles Yuinika can pick up, and each style has different stats, spells and attacks.?

The styles approach makes you want to "collect them all," hunting down different categories of monsters so you can find out what that mysterious level six spell is for each style. Since wandering monsters are invisible here until they attack you, that takes luck and patience. Not too much patience, though; as I said, this is a relatively short game.

Knight of the Earthends costs anywhere between $1 and $8 depending on what kind of a sale Kemco is running at the time. If you've already played through the deeper and better Symphony of Eternity and Final Fantasy III and you enjoy some frisky inter-character banter, this can be your next stop on the Google Play market.

Neighbors help out in Tennessee tornado recovery

HARRISON, Tenn. (AP) - The communities of Harrison and Ooltewah are still scarred with uprooted, twisted trees and homes under construction after a March 2 tornado, but neighbors are helping each other on the path to recovery.

The EF3 tornado destroyed 82 homes and damaged 262 more. But even as bulldozers and roofers repair the damage, not everyone has been able to recover as quickly, The Chattanooga Times Free Press reports (http://bit.ly/V55SE7 ).

Carl Evett lost his small uninsured home in the tornado, and while many insured homeowners have been able to rebuild, he's been struggling.

So during this holiday season, his neighbors partnered with volunteers from the Bayside Baptist Church to use donated materials and the money he received from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to build a new home.

Republican Senator: chances for "fiscal cliff" deal "exceedingly good"

CHICAGO (Reuters) - The FBI is still searching for one of two convicted bank robbers who escaped last week from a high-rise jail in downtown Chicago by lowering themselves on a makeshift rope nearly 20 stories to the street. Kenneth Conley, 38, and his cellmate, Joseph Jose Banks, 37, escaped from the Metropolitan Correctional Center early on the morning of December 18. The pair apparently broke a window in the cell they shared, squeezed through the opening and lowered themselves to the street. They then hailed a cab to make their getaway. ...
