Robot octopus hints at softer mechanical future

8 hrs.

A robotic octopus has begun to move, highlighting a future where our mechanical helpers (or overlords) are soft, smart, and flexible.

The soft-bodied, eight-armed robot is the output of a European Commission-funded project?to build a machine that moves and thinks like a real octopus, arguably one of Earth?s smartest animals.

The project members posted on YouTube Tuesday a video of their robot that shows the machine scooting along the bottom of a lab pool.?

It?s clear from the video that two of the tentacles are outfitted with shape memory alloy. That means they move when heated.?

?The other six arms are silicone with a steel cable inside, and this steel cable is attached to a bunch of nylon cables, and by manipulating those nylon cables, the tentacle can be made to wiggle around and even grip things,? notes IEEE?s Automation blog.

Shape memory alloy is the same technology that allows the robotic jellyfish under development in the U.S. to swim.

Why do we need these robots? The Octopus project answers this way:

The animal-like robots offer the possibility from one side to take inspiration from nature to build up new advanced technologies, which operate with better performance in difficult or normally impracticable and unstructured environments.?

From the other side, biomimetics robots give the possibility to biologists and neurophysiologists to study animal functions and behaviors with physical model, for new scientific results.

That means new tools to explore the oceans in greater detail, spy on enemies, and tickle our curiosity about the world around us. It also means robots are more than just clunky, metallic machines that bake cookies?and scoop poop.

Mega Millions winner in Kansas comes forward

AP Photo/Paul Sakuma

A customer fills out a lottery ticket in Palo Alto, Calif., on Friday before the winning numbers for the $640 million jackpot were drawn in the Mega Millions lottery.

By James Eng, msnbc.com

The wait is finally over ? for real this time. One of the three winners of the record $656 million Mega Millions jackpot has claimed?a $218.6 million share of the prize in Kansas.

Kansas Lottery officials scheduled a press conference for 3:30 p.m. local time Friday (4:30 p.m.ET) at state lottery headquarters in Topeka.

No further details about the winner will be released before the press conference, officials said. They?ve previously said the winning ticket was bought at a store in northeast Kansas.

Lottery officials have said the other two winning tickets were sold in Maryland and Illinois. But so far no one has stepped up to claim his or her share of the prize in those states ? at least no?one who has produced a valid ticket.

One Maryland woman, Mirlande Wilson, a McDonald?s employee and mother of seven, had claimed to media outlets earlier in the week that she purchased the winning ticket to last Friday night's drawing. But doubts quickly surfaced, and on Thursday Wilson told NBCWashington.com she seems to have misplaced the ticket.

Maryland lottery officials said no one has stepped up in that state?to claim a share of the prize, the largest in lottery history. Likewise, the Illinois winner has yet to come public.

The winning numbers were: 2-4-23-38-46 and the Mega Ball 23.

Ministry of Agriculture Demands Funding for ... - Iraq Business News

Ministry of Agriculture Demands Funding for Date Palms

The Iraqi Agriculture Ministry has reportedly ?demanded? that the ministries of planning and finance increase the Palm General Authority?s allocations from 4bn to 8bn IQD ($3.4m to $6.8m) to ensure the success of the annual plan for the development of palm groves.

According to AKnews, Kamel Mukhlab, the director general of the authority, said they now have six aircraft which are used to treat diseases affecting the palms, as well as an excellent staff of 1,200 employee.

?Keeping the allocations the same is disastrous because we will have to dismiss most of the workers who work on daily wages?, said Mukhlab.

The Ministry of Agriculture began a widespread campaign to treat the palm groves near the areas that witnessed war and armed operations in the past.

The ministry announced the allocation of 2,500 donums [625 hectares] to plant palm groves for over 560 kinds of dates.

Iraq today has 11 million date palms and the ministry plans to increase to 30 million trees over the next ten years.

In the 1970s, Iraq?s 34 million date palms accounted for 30 percent of the total number found in the world. Official figures indicate that annual exports from Basra province alone reached more than 130,000 tons.

Vizio drops from No. 1 to No. 3 in HDTVs

1 hr.

Though 2011 was a rough year for all HDTV makers, Vizio had a worse year than most. Vizio, once number one in U.S. market share, back in the fourth quarter of 2010, felt the bottom fall out with a whopping 44 percent drop in volume by the same period a year later.

Meanwhile, during the same year-long span, Samsung, LG and Sharp were all rewarded by an increase in U.S. market share, with bumps of 17.9 percent, 35.2 percent and 60.09 percent respectively.

While Panasonic, Sharp, Samsung and LG all make their own panels and assemble their own HDTVs,?Vizio?makes nothing. They buy LCD panels and parts from outside companies and relies on third-party factories, mainly those owned and operated by the Taiwanese company AmTran, to assemble these parts into TVs. Vizio earns thin margins for its dealers and itself, relying on warehouse clubs, Target and Walmart for sales volume.

?Samsung triumphed in the price war that raged in the U.S. LCD market in the fourth quarter of 2011,? said Tom Morrod, senior analyst and head of TV Technology for IHS iSuppli. ?The company was able to offer a range of price-competitive sets with a rich choice of features that U.S. consumers wanted. This allowed the company to outperform the competition during the all-important holiday selling season.?

The year ahead
We anticipate Vizio?s problems will continue this year. Out of around fifty HDTV models Vizio debuted in 2011, the company has chosen to carry over almost all of them for the 2012 model year. Samsung, LG and Panasonic revamped their respective lines with new features including enhanced Internet connectivity/apps, new thin styling, more LED and 3-D models, gesture and voice control (LG, Samsung), and even built-in HD cameras with face recognition (Samsung).

Sharp has found a new niche with its 60-inch and larger screens and continues to add features while offering very aggressive prices. Panasonic has finally entered the large screen LCD market with its own innovative 47- and 55-inch screens exhibiting deep blacks and outstanding viewing angles (review link). Newly introduced 2012 plasma models offer improved performance and new features as well.

With new features, sizes, svelte styling and other improvements from Samsung, LG, Panasonic and Sharp consumers won't have a hard time deciding whether they want the latest and greatest in HDTV or a carry-over from a failed 2011-model mix from Vizio. Consumers will once again vote with their wallets.

HD Guru has just begun to test the 2012s and plan to publish a number of reviews during the next few weeks.?Have a question for the HD Guru? Send an?email.

Positive Customer Support Attracts More Business From Existing ...

?

A joint venture marketing partnership gets a business and their line of products and/or services in front of new customers, but failure to execute satisfactorily will kill the deal. If you are unable to properly service the inflow of customers and ensure satisfied clients than the partnership flow of hot leads will dry up and many partners may walk away from the deal if they feel customers have been impacted negatively.

The biggest fear of any joint venture partner is how there customers will be treated from the start of the sales cycle to the delivery of the goods or services and any issues that may arise in between. No one wants to be the person that recommends a company only for that person to have an unpleasant experience. This needs to be a number one priority for heavily sales focused organizations that have teams constantly pushing for the next deal to close. Create processes in the exchange between partners to make sure customers are followed up with on specific time intervals post sales transaction to ensure any issues are resolved quickly and efficiently.

Ticket System for Issues

Depending on the size of the partner businesses and the number of potential customers it is wise to have a ticket system in place for reporting issues. This system should be made available to all partners for the purpose of responding to customer service issues as they arise in order to make sure they?re handled in an efficient and timely manner. There?s nothing worse then being a customer with a problem and feeling like you are contacting a black hole. Create an online email form where customers can fill out requests or ask questions. Make sure the online ticket system has an automated response to reassure the customer that their issue has been received and will be addressed soon.

Log Problems & Update During Meetings

Logging all customer problems should be mandatory in the partnership agreement so that both parties can improve the customer experience. Both partner companies should be seeking clients that will actively refer their business based on a smooth and professional customer service experience. During meetings with partners resolving customer complaints and problems with service should be addressed without delay and if there is a string of issues that stem from a single problem do not wait to address the problem at a later date get it fixed immediately. It can be easy to avoid making changes to personal or procedures, but that?s why any partnership needs to start slow and work out any kinks between the two companies servicing the customer together.

Reward Excellent Customer Service

If you have an employee that is repeatedly acknowledged by customers as especially helpful, make sure to reward that employee in a way that fits your company?s culture. Whether it?s a small bonus or gift certificate, employees that go above and beyond to provide excellent service deserve recognition for the work they?re putting in. Resolving customer problems and dealing with issues that the sales team may have not been clear about can be difficult on a customer support team member. For this reason it?s extremely important to do everything possible to make sure the marketing and sales pitches are consistent across the board.

Take the time to make consumers feel special and you?ll be rewarded with long term customers that ultimately assist you in attracting new business by their referrals. Failure to provide consistent and excellent customer service will only cost your business in the long run by losing crucial customer referrals. Spend time with your front line of customer support team to understand the issues that they?re facing repeatedly to try and resolve them from occurring altogether in the future.

In Wisconsin, Mitt Romney is running against Obama, not Rick Santorum

Even before Tuesday's Wisconsin primary is finished, Mitt Romney breaks away from a tough GOP primary season to reset themes for a November campaign against President Obama

Mitt Romney strode into a town hall meeting here late afternoon Monday, not accompanied by his wife or sons, but by one of the biggest stars in the national Republican Party: US Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin.

That Congressman Ryan introduced Mr. Romney, and then sat beside him to help answer audience questions signals a shift in a tumultuous GOP presidential primary. After four months of hard knocks against GOP rivals, Romney is back to the place he wanted to be from the beginning ? looking presidential.

Leading in polls for today's Wisconsin primary, the former Massachusetts governor no longer considers himself just another nominee, but the inevitable challenger to President Obama who must now start focusing on winning the race in November.

Unlike GOP challenger Rick Santorum, who spent over a week in the state making appearances in small towns, Romney dropped into just four counties and avoided standard photo-ops like bowling or eating bratwurst with locals, which is the bread-and-butter strategy of the Santorum campaign.

Instead, Romney is striking a more presidential tone, refusing to attack or even mention his opponents, and instead sticking to purely fiscal issues such as the economic prosperity, growing jobs, and health care. He is direct in his criticism of Mr. Obama but, unlike Mr. Santorum and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, his tone is less sanctimonious and more respectful.

?He did not cause the recession ? but he was going to be the one who was going to end it,? Romney said of the president Monday.

Meanwhile in Washington, President Obama today let loose on both Romney and Ryan, with his first, all-out attack on Ryan's House GOP budget plan and, on Monday, his first television ad to go after Romney by name, targeting ties to Big Oil.

Romney appears eager to take up the fight.

?What he?s been talking about at those campaign stops has really been about President Obama. He no longer mentions Santorum and has changed his focus and is talking more about national issues,? says Arnold Shober, a political scientist at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wis.

It helps that Romney is also picking up endorsements from key figures in his party based in Wisconsin. Most top Republicans in this state ? with the notable exception of GOP Governor Scott Walker ? have explicitly lent Romney their support, including US Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner, who introduced both Romney and Ryan Monday, and US Sen. Ron Johnson.

Shazam 5.0 update identifies audio in a split second, helps tortoise hands become the hare

Image
Fits of inspiration are usually inopportune -- like when you realized eight years too late that it might've been wise to invest in Google. The same goes for that panicked impulse that strikes somewhere between rocking out to the last dregs of a song as it spills out of the radio and the time it takes for you to locate your phone, unlock it and launch Shazam. Well, for those of you slow on the draw, the company's making its music identification service a whole lot quicker. Now, iPhone and iPod touch users can track down artist info from music or TV in a literal second, courtesy of a software refresh. It's all part of a 5.0 update, available now, for the outfit's trio of apps -- Free, Encore and (RED) -- that also adds a new UI, the ability to comment on tags via social networks, as well as additional language support for South American Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese and Korean. So the next time you hear a track you swear was your jam in the mid-90's, you'll know in a heartbeat precisely which Dishwalla album to download and secretly cherish. Remember them? Official PR after the break.

Survey: Folks Rate New iPad As Best Ever; Hot On Retina Display, Pretty Cool On Heat-Gate

new-ipad-black-640x480.jpegAnother consumer milestone of sorts for Apple, and one more sign of how competitors are going to have to raise the bar yet again: the new iPad is proving to be highest-rated yet of the three versions of the iPad tablet released so far by the company, according to the latest report from ChangeWave Research. In a survey from the last week of March, more than four out of every five owners -- 82 percent, to be exact -- said they were "very satisfied" with the new device, with 16 percent saying they are "somewhat satisfied." And while the high-resolution Retina display has proven to be the biggest hit with new owners, one of the more high profile drawbacks, claims that the device was getting too hot during prolonged use -- turned out to be not such a hot issue after all. The caveat in this research is that it only covers 200 people. 200! That's nothing, and only a small portion of the 25,000 that ChangeWave says it has access to for surveys. On the more constructive side, this is one more indicator of how this newest tablet from Apple will progress in sales in the months ahead.

Professor Spotlight: Catalina Ocampo Londo?o

Features ? By Marina Balleria on March 31, 2012 12:51 PM

It is Catalina Ocampo Londo?o?s first year teaching here as a Visiting Professor in the Spanish department. She?s come here by a rather circuitous route; she was born and raised in Colombia, went to school in Virginia and Boston, and in between getting her various degrees (her dissertation is still in the works), she has lived in Pittsburg, Minneapolis and now Tacoma.

Ocampo Londo?o is interested in melding various art forms. She is teaching a class on the essay as an art form, while her dissertation looks at the history of literary criticism as if it were a work of literature. In all of her classes, she attempts to use different art forms to engage students with an unfamiliar language.

?

You?re a professor in Spanish Literature, which is an enormous field. What do you specialize in?

I focus on Latin American literature and mainly on the twentieth century. Specifically, I?m really interested right now in critical thought in Latin America. I?ve always read fiction and poetry and all these things, but my research grown? to things like the essay form and criticism. I?m combining it a little bit with literature because Latin America is a really interesting place because of the divisions between genres.

Things are a lot more fluid there; there is a lot more hybridization and movement between fiction and criticism, nonfiction and fiction, both in terms of the works themselves but also institutionally the way that it is structured. Writers are also critics; writers have also historically been politicians.

Are you teaching any classes specifically on that topic?

Right now I?m teaching a class on the Spanish-American essay. We?re reading stuff all the way from Independence to the present. The essay is an exciting topic because it?s the one topic where if something doesn?t fit it?s called an essay. We?re reading documents from the independence, lectures that people gave, communist manifestos and newspaper articles.

This is your first year teaching here as well and you?re teaching an introductory level course. What is it like teaching people who are just beginning to learn the language?

It?s exciting, especially when I can get someone who is there taking the class because it is a requirement to keep learning Spanish. The other thing that is challenging for me teaching 102 and 201 is how to present culture to someone who doesn?t quite have the language. This also functions in literature classes as well.

For example, in the essay class many of the texts we are reading are very difficult texts. Sometimes the language, the references in the text and the world they are in is very foreign. So the challenge is how do you take these very difficult texts and cultural material to people who don?t have full grasp of the language yet. This is something that I?m still experimenting with.

So do you switch into English sometimes?

In classes 201 and above I try to stay completely in Spanish.

For a while I worked with a professor at Harvard who has a little initiative called the Cultural Agents Initiative. She looks at the ways in which art has been used productively to affect social change. I worked with her for two years and learned some really amazing stuff with her.

We did many things; for example, we put on a conference of people who use photography not just showing political issues but also teaching people how to use photography so they can be agents of change. One of the things I came across as I was doing this was that a lot of teaching artists would use the arts as a way of teaching difficult material in a way that is accessible.

When you say agents of social change, what are some concrete examples of that?

One of the big people who does this is a Brazilian named Augusto Boal who does theater. He started out as an actor but then after a while he started developing this particular form of theater that involved the audience in the process of doing theater.

So he would stage a certain problem that the community was having and then they would stop it. Instead of presenting the tragedy, he would stop it and then the people in the audience would try to change what had happened or what would happen. It?s called forum theater. Afterwards they would discuss ways of transforming their community based on the solutions that had come up through theater.

There are tons of these examples of people doing these things across the world.

Do you try to do these sorts of things in your classes?

Clearly I?m not trying to do the same thing in Puget Sound, but the same types of principles apply. One of the things I learned is that art makes things accessible to us. So if you have a hard time coming to the world of text and reading something, there?s other ways for you to enter this world. You can do individual arts, or through performance, or creative writing. So I try to bring creative writing into my courses, and also have the possibility for students to bring creative writing into their projects. Things don?t map on perfectly to the world of the university, but there are ways to integrate them.

So you were born in Colombia and now you?re at Puget Sound; what happened in between?

Well, a lot of things. I was born in Bogot?, grew up there and went to high school there. I went to an American school because my parents continued to want to learn English. At some point the school was particular in that almost everyone in the school was Colombian. There was a small percentage of American kids that were there with the Embassy or the government. But it was mostly Colombians who stayed in Colombia.

But for various reasons I had the opportunity to come to the U.S. I went to summer schools and it got into my head that I wanted to come to the U.S. It was partially because this was the 1990s in Bogot? and it was just not a good time. It was the height of violence from drug cartels.

Did you experience any of that violence personally? How did it touch your life?

In the sense that there were bombs going off in the city and that was just part of your reality. I never had a bomb go off near me and fortunately never had anyone I knew hurt in this. But, my school was in the mountains and overlooked Bogot? and there was one particular bomb that happened after school. I remember seeing this bomb go off. I remember we heard it and we all went to the window, and you could see it.

So it fortunately never touched me personally but the type of atmosphere was just so different from what I saw in the United States and the kind of life that young people live there.

So I decided that I wanted to come to the United States. My parents weren?t happy with the idea, but I applied and fortunately it worked out financially. So I came to the University of Virginia and that?s where I did my undergrad.

Then, I had the horrible idea of doing graduate school right after college. I went to graduate school at Brown and halfway through determined that I needed to have a break. So in the midst of my graduate career I did many things?I was a copy editor for a while, I worked as a professional translator, I worked with this professor [at Harvard], I did internships at art institutions, I lived in Minneapolis for a while.

So what happened after Minneapolis?

I was doing some freelance and then I decided I needed to come back to grad school. I was coming across some really interesting texts and I realized I really needed to write that book. So I moved back to Boston, starting working with that same professor and did graduate work. So I worked on my dissertation and actually continue to work on my dissertation.

What is the topic of your dissertation?

The best way of describing it is that rather than looking at literature through the lens of criticism, I?m looking at the history of criticism through the lens of literature. There?s a couple of novels that came out between the late ?50s that ?70s that in many ways make fun of, imitate or parody critical language.

What do you do in your free time?

I have a three-year-old son, so that takes up a lot of time. I love to cook. I decided in my old age to pick up the mandolin. I?ve never played an instrument before so it feels like something very, very new. Also, getting to know Tacoma. I?ve spent so much time moving that a lot of my free time is spent getting to know the places where I am.

What?s something about you that would surprise your students?

My grandfather bought a circus. He was forced to give it back shortly afterwards. He was an interesting character. He was sort of an entrepreneur before his time, he also came up with this strange scheme to raise ostriches in Colombia, which never really panned out. He also had this butterfly raising business, which is actually very lucrative. They?re raised to sell at weddings.

In my secret life I also write poetry. Somehow that has been dissociated from the university persona and didn?t really occur to me. You could also say that I?ve heard people speaking in tongues, danced with Shakira when she and I were both 16 (seriously, long story), read Ancient Greek at some point in my life and currently live with three adults, a preschooler, two cats, a dog and a seven-year-old sourdough starter. I?m also much more comfortable with writing than with speaking, and am horrifically shy. My students will probably not buy a word of that, but it?s true.

After years of out cries from fans around the world, and countless YouTube videos comparing the latest Madden releases to NFL 2K5, it seems your voice has been heard.?After weeks of?negotiations, the NFL has finally agreed to a 10 year deal granting 2K Sports the rights to produce new titles.

Design a new treatment for anorexia nervosa | Fitness for Health

British researchers have designed a short video clip, including visual and aural elements to combat anxiety and food refusal experienced by people with anorexia nervosa (AN). Can be played in ?iPod? and ?P4? and is a new treatment modality based on the theory that the image is a key element in the instinctive and emotional reactions. The proposal outlined in the latest issue of ?Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics?.

Interventions that use visual elements to disrupt the production of images and emotional reactions have proven effective in reducing anxiety related to eating and emotional reactions.

So far, the impact of these videos in anorexia has been investigated in a small number of cases, the objective of that study was to confirm previous findings on this tool in a larger sample size.

Thus, the video was compared to a control condition musical two different populations of patients with anorexia nervosa and a control group composed of healthy subjects (HCs).

The hypothesis was that participants with anorexia consume more food than the test and experience a lower level of anxiety watching the video and that no changes would be observed in this variable in the control group.

The 20-minute video featuring images and audio specific eating disorders, while the music used in the control group were 20 minutes of classical modern music. The participants, women between 18 and 55, were 19 members of the control group and 18 patients who had suffered for an average of 11.4 years problems of anorexia nervosa.

In the group of women with anorexia, there were great variations in the amount of food consumed, but ate significantly more food on the conditions set by the video. Additionally, this group showed a greater reduction in anxiety and negative thoughts and more good humor.

There was a reduction of attention bias to food pictures were recorded under the conditions set by the video, but insufficient to the discoveries made negligible.

While in the control group, there were no differences in the amount of food consumed or changes in visual analog scales. He was, however, a trend toward greater reduction in attention bias towards food with music but not with the test video.

Thus, the study shows that people with anorexia nervosa consume much more food when they envision this special video when listening to music, repeating the results of the case series studied previously.

Moreover, this was accompanied by a significant reduction in intrusive thoughts, anxiety and improved mood. Attention bias toward food-related stimuli was also reduced under the conditions laid down by the video of the study but failed to reach significance due to its low power.

No differences between the two conditions in the control group, except for a no significant reduction of attention bias in the group under the conditions that made the music.

The pattern of response in the control group differed from the group of patients with anorexia in no change in the amount of food consumed, anxiety, intrusive thoughts or mood.

Non-profits and Social Media: Fundraising ... - Business 2 Community

Twive and ReceiveFundraising is one of the necessary evils of the non-profit world.

In order to keep a non-profit afloat, and do the good works that you originally set out to do, you have to be funded. That requires some mix of seeking grants from the government and businesses, as well as approaching individuals to ?invest? in the work you are doing. And quite often, in this economy, it might seem as though you spend more time trying to raise funds, than you do on your actual social mission.

In his wonderful new book, The Non-Profit Narrative (which I?ll be reviewing very soon), Dan Portnoy notes:

Non-profit organizations weren?t started to consistently ask for money and talk about the troubles of keeping the lights on. Remember, they were started to change the world.

And yet, if you work at a non-profit organization, you may feel like you always have your hand out. And that might actually be the perception that many have of your organization. But what if you just took the time to maximize your fundraising efforts, so that you could generate more money with each ask, and therefore, not have to ask so often? Wouldn?t that be a wonderful thing? It?s no fun asking for money.

Unless you?re creative. And have the right tools at your disposal.

Enter Razoo Giving, an online social giving platform. My friend Ifdy Perez, a champion of social good, and the Community Manager at Razoo, which I believe is the most robust social giving platform[, sent me a DM on Twitter yesterday telling me about their new project: Twive and Receive. When I checked it out, I knew I not only had to write this post about it, but I also signed up. But more on that later?

Twive and Receive is a 24-hour online giving competition scheduled for June 14th. Folks like you and me will represent our communities on Twitter and other social platforms to raise money for our favorite local non-profit, while at the same time competing to help them win a share of $30,000.

Razoo has hosted one-day events like this before, but usually on a more hyper-local or regional level. For instance, ?Give to the Max Day? back in November in Washington, D.C. raised more than $2-million in just one day for over a thousand local non-profits. Pretty impressive, eh?

Here?s what I like about this particular campaign:

1. It?s social ? At the heart of this campaign is Twitter, but other platforms like Facebook, Pinterest, and even blogging will be used to raise awareness during this 24-hour period. While one or two people in each community will be heading up the effort, they?ll be using their online social influence to get others on board.

2. It fosters community ? The large majority of the campaign will be done online, but there can be offline elements as well. And you and other locals can band together online, and even gather together offline, to rally the troops and raise awareness and funds for your cause. Nothing brings people together better than a shared cause that benefits your local community.

3. It?s short ? Many high profile fundraisers seem to go on forever. And ever. This is limited to 24-hours. In. Out. It?s Over.

4. It?s competitive ? Gamification is one of the buzzwords of the social realm these days. Foursquare and other platforms use gamification to get people involved and keep them involved. Who doesn?t love a little friendly competition? It?s you and your city against a host of other cities, seeing who can raise the most money. Community pride can be a powerful motivating factor.

5. It?s fun ? Or, it CAN be fun. It?s all how you execute. But when?s the last time you enjoyed fundraising? Usually we dread the task of asking others for money. Here, you can have some fun and raise money at the same time.

6. It fosters and rewards creativity ? I have no idea how this campaign will shake out, but I?m convinced of one thing: the cities that win will be the ones that exhibit the most creativity. If all you do is tweet about raising money, you can only go so far. But what if you get local businesses and media involved? Are there offline methods you can use to get people involved online? What about a tweetup for happy hour? There are so many things

7. It fosters relationships between the community and the non-profit ? If you do this right, your non-profit will be on board, and they?ll be promoting it as well. You?ll have the chance to connect local folks to the non-profit, who might never have engaged with them in the past. And it feels good to give something back to your community as an individual. At the same time, the non-profit benefits by rolling up their sleeves and working alongside community members.

8. Razoo will help you along the way ? This isn?t some promotion or contest where you?re told to do something, and then the organizing business disappears until the last day. Razoo will be putting together an online toolkit to help you plan your day, including widgets you can put on websites and Facebook pages. They?ll also be hosting weekly conference calls to bring you up to date on the campaign, and offer you tips.

9. Everyone wins ? You win by being a part of something good in your community, and you?ll get to meet and build relationships with others. Your non-profit wins, because even if they don?t ?win? the competition, they still get to keep the money that was raised for them. Plus they?ll most likely have access to new donors. And Razoo wins because they are the organizers of this, and many non-profits will be introduced to their great platform.

I?ve already signed up to be the point person for my community in Lancaster, and I?ve chosen the non-profit for which we?ll be fundraising: Water Street Ministries (client) which provides a variety of services to the homeless and needy in our area. They serve a lot of people and do great work.

What about you? Are you willing to step up and be the point person for your community? If there is no one representing your city, why not consider signing up now? And if your city is already spoken for, join the cause! Contact the person listed next to your city and offer to lend a hand, or a tweet.

What do you think are the hallmarks or elements of a successful online fundraising campaign? What has worked for you in the past? How can you incorporate these elements into your fundraising efforts all year long?
